Chapter Meeting - September 21, 2024


The September 21, 2024 chapter meeting was unique, beginning at 10am with the first SUPER SALE of overstock chapter publications ("Keystone Chronicles" and "The High Line"). 


Members and non-members alike were treated to unlimited purchases of back issues at the super low price of $1.00 per issue.  This offer was only available for in-person purchases.

Modelers Meeting
("Modeling the PRR in Lambertiville, New Jersey")

Jim Blair presented Lambertville, New Jersey’s rich transportation history, including river, canal and the Pennsylvania Railroad's Belvidere Division. Passenger and freight activities in Lambertville offer an interesting and diverse Pennsylvania Railroad modeling opportunity.

Feature Presentation

("The PRR in Lambertiville, New Jersey")

Jim Blair discussed PRR Lambertiville operations, located 16 miles north of Trenton, NJ on the Delaware River.  Lambertville was an important location on PRR's Belvidere-Delaware Division, commonly called the"Bel-Del." The decade between 1935 -1945 was a period of significant change,with passenger and freight volumes during WWII providing this scenic route with surge of track side activity.  This presentation will be made available, in the coming weeks, on the Chapters YouTube page.

Feature Presentation

The June 22, 2024 chapter meeting was well attended, including a number of vendors who offered railroad memorabilia and HO model tank cars, among other items, not to mention the Philadelphia Chapter Store.


Modelers Meeting ("Early PRR Welded Box & Automobile Cars: Prototypes and a Few Models")
Ted Culotta presented t
he Pennsy's building of welded house cars in 1936 and continuing into the 1950s; also building several interesting proprietary designs before transitioning to more standard types in the mid-1950s. This presentation highlights these cars as well as how to model many in HO scale.

Business Meeting

At the conclusion of the Business Meeting three chapter members were recognized for ongoing services provided to Philadelphia Chapter operations.  Thank you all for your multi-year dedication to ongoing chapter operations!

Thomas Lavin - Philadelphia Chapter Treasurer / Membership Chairman 

Thomas Lavin recognized for multi year service as both Treasurer and Membership Chairman.  Thomas is currently continuing with these responsibilities, all crucial to chapter operations. 

Mark Cole - Philadelphia Chapter Director of Sales 

Mark Cole recognized for multi year service as Sales Director.  Mark currently continues in this position, running the chapter store at chapter meetings and remote locations, such as the annual meeting.

Russell Polo - Philadelphia Chapter Vice President 

Russ Polo recognized for multi year service as Vice President, Newsletter Editor and Webmaster.  Russ currently continues in this position, participating in operations planning, newsletter and web content creation.

Feature Presentation ("From the Main Line - Experiencing the Pennsylvania Railroad") 
Michael Froio presented an update to his ongoing project, From the Main Line, which examines the former Pennsylvania Railroad network and the landscape it traveled. The lecture expanded on ideas and methodologies of envisioning a railroad that has been gone for 55 years and how historical works have inspired his interpretation of the transportation corridor and surrounding landscape. The presentation was also recorded and will/has been made available on the chapter YouTube page.

Chapter Meeting - March 2, 2024

The March 2, 2024 chapter meeting was well attended (110 attendees, combined via in-person and Zoom).  The days events included a number of vendors offering railroad and model railroad merchandise, as well as the Philadelphia Chapter Store selling recent and back issues of "The High Line" and other merchandise.


Modelers Meeting:  "Restoring a PRR M1a Brass Loco"
Chapter member Ed Seyerlein presented restoration of a Gem Guild (DH-103) PRR M1a brass locomotive. The presentation discussed how to make 50 year old brass engines operable on today's layouts.  Ed also reviewed model accuracy, painting, variations and weathering techniques.  This presentation was recorded and is available on the Chapters YouTube page.


Dinning Car and Chapter Business Meeting

At the conclusion of the Modelers Meeting, attendees enjoyed lunch, followed by the business meeting.


Feature Presentation:  "The Spirit of Altoona"
 
Joe DeFrancesco, Executive Director of the Altoona "
Railroaders Memorial Museum," presented with a focus on the development of the K4 class using the Altoona Test Department’s scientific methods. Exploring the K4 design and 1361’s career. Discussion on the 1361 as a memorial to railroaders of Altoona and the Pennsylvania Railroad. Restoration plans, progress, and the tracks ahead.  This presentation was also recorded and is available on the Chapters YouTube page.

Philadelphia Chapter - 2024 Meeting Shedule

The Philadelphia Chapter will meet quarterly in 2023.  All meetings are scheduled to be conducted in-person and will also include an on-line Zoom simulcast.
